History of Booing Gari by Gwendoline

Introducing the history of Booin Gari by Gwendoline (IELTS class)

Photo 1

The Booin Gari festival gathers aboriginal people and Torres Strait islanders to celebrate and share the indigenous culture and to build positive relationships. The term ‘Booin Gari’ means ‘Come this way’. This festival was created in 2008 in Tewantin, the same year as the ‘Sorry speech’ by Kevin Rudd the Prime Minister.

Photo 3

This year, 2018, the Gubbi Gubbi people hosted the festival in. Noosaville. The Gubbi Gubbi people is one Australian Aboriginal group using the Murri language. The word ‘Gubbi’ comes from ‘Kabi’ which means ‘no’ in Murri language.

Photo 2

Even if there are subdivisions in the Gubbi Gubbi people (there are many clans like Giga Bora or Kaiya Bora), Booin Gari was hosted by all the Gubbi Gubbi people.

photo 4

Rainbow snake and octopus

Thanks to their creative events and performances, they succeeded in sharing a piece of their culture with the Lexis students and festival visitors.

Beach Safety Presentation

This afternoon Lexis Noosa students spent some time with our local representative from the Surf Life Saving Queensland.

Beach Safety

We hope you all learnt a lot about Australia’s beaches and what to do if you need help while swimming. Just remember no flags = no swim!!

Student Profile – Dominik from Switzerland

Dominik first came to Lexis Noosa in 2017 and studied for a few months with Charmaine in General English.  He was a great asset to have in the Cooking Option in the afternoon class. He shared his expert knowledge with the class and he improved his vocabulary about food.  After he left he went travelling to Cairns and then south all the way to Kangaroo  Island.

Photo: Dominik in Cooking Class July 2017 & a visit to Cairns in August 2017.

Dominik always had a dream to work in Europe in a group of international chefs.  He worked with world renowned chef Anton Mosmann in London making and serving food at Wimbledon Tennis and at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.

Photo: Dominik working at Wimbledon and Tottenham Hotspur in London.

Domink returned to Lexis Noosa in September 2018 to further improve his English and to travel some more around Australia.  He did a road trip to Agnes Water last weekend and he has more travel dreams to fulfill.

We loved seeing you again Dominik and wish you all the best for your future career. Hopefully we can visit your restaurant one day.  Your food is always amazing!

Booin Gari Festival

Looks like our Lexis Noosa students had a wonderful at the Booin Gari festival yesterday.

Through song and dance the local Gabi Gabi people, plus other Queensland tribes, told us about their history and culture. It was a wet day but it didn’t dampen the students spirits.
