haloweenThere will be a BBQ and BEER provided.  We will have games, prizes and music throughout the night so bring your ipod and we can share music from all over the world.  The theme is fancy dress so find a cape or a mask or some horns for your head. There will be a prize for the best dressed male and best dressed female.  SEE YOU THERE!

What’s with all the bikes??

Noticed all the fit-looking people running and cycling around town this week?  The Noosa Triathlon is on again from this weekend!

The Noosa Triathlon is one of the leading triathlon events held in Australia.  One of the best features of the race is that it offers the chance for the general public to compete in the same event as Olympic gold medalists (though perhaps not much chance of beating them!).

Running in conjunction with the Triathlon is a multi-sports festival (any excuse for a party!), including a firework display in Noosa Woods (at the end of Hastings St) on Friday night at 8pm.  You can see a list of all the events here:  http://www.usmevents.com.au/ntmsf/functions.html .

With 5000 competitiors and many, many more spectators, the Noosa Triathlon is one of the big events on the calendar here on the Sunshine Coast.  Why not wander down with some friends to take in all the action?

Students love Fraser Island

Last week 8 GV students loaded up a 4WD and hit the trail for a 3 day Fraser Island camping adventure.  This package is exclusive to Global Village and includes one night at G’Kari Aboriginal Campsite which is the only place on the island where campfires are allowed.  The group made it all the way to the top of the island and back with only one small problem… a damaged tyre.

Self drive Fraser trips leave every Friday morning and cost only $199 per person including all fees and camping gear.  Places are filling fast for this weeks journey so get in to see Don if you are keen to go.

Farewell to Myriam and Johan, the perfect couple

Johan Mican and Myriam Canon came to GV Noosa in May this year and have been inseparable since their arrival. After getting married in Colombia they spent a month in Sydney before coming to Noosa where they have both been studying English full-time.

johanAlthough they are sad to be leaving Noosa, they are excited about returning to their family and friends in Columbia.  Johan has successfully completed Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate and IELTS, while Myriam has done Intermediate, IELTS and Upper Intermediate courses.

Claiming that Queenslanders are harder to understand than New South Welshmen due to more liberal use of slang, they both agree that their own English has dramatically improved during their stay.

After months of studying English and working as cleaners at Global Village, they hope to return in a couple of years to see the rest of our beautiful country. “We would love to come back and travel around Australia in a camper van, to see the Outback and Darwin, Western Australia and Tasmania! This has been an extended honeymoon for us but now it is time to go home.”

Preferring each others’ company over large groups or parties, Johan and Myriam have made many friends during their stay and hope to keep in touch with all of them.

We wish them all the very best for the future… see you on Facebook guys!

Moving on? Stay in touch!

We love to keep in touch with former students, so don’t forget to join our Facebook page

We have around 900 former, current and future students in the GV Noosa group at the moment, so it’s a great way to keep in touch with your classmates and friends.  Click on the logo above to go straight to our page.

GV Workshop starts November 3rd!

GV Workshop is a great new innovation from GV Australia to maximise your employment opportunities.   The new course starts on November 3rd in Noosa, so sign up now!

What is it?  GV Workshop is a free afternoon program designed to teach students everything they need to know to find work in Australia.

When is it?  Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 2pm – 3pm.  It runs for 4 weeks.

Who should sign up?  It will be very useful for students on Working Holiday or Student visas, but the skills it teaches are transferable to any English speaking work situation.

What exactly am I going to learn?  The course is designed as a workshop to teach the skills required to find work in Australia.  It’s a great mix of the academic writing skills required to read and write resumes, cover letter and job ads, the verbal skills to call and attend interviews and the cultural skills required for working in Australia.   It’s very practical, too!  Every student will walk away with resumes, cover letters, telephone scripts and lots of interview practice.

How do I sign up?  There’ll be a sign-up sheet on the noticeboard shortly.

Is this going to cost me anything?  Nope, it’s completely free for our students.  See you there!

Any further questions?  Ask Becky or Nina!

Learning English in the Sun

The courtyard is a great place for speaking activities, spotted this morning were….

Mt Coolum… What a View

Today was perfect weather for climbing a mountain, so general English students got on the bus to Mt Coolum, and were not disappointed when they eventually reached the summit.

Kathrin was the first to reach the summit, although it was not really a race, and the rest of the group were not far behind.  Only one Band-Aid was required for a minor knee injury, while others made it up and back unscathed wearing only thongs (not recommended for climbing mountains).  The view from the top was spectacular, and well worth the 45 minute climb despite some rather sore legs.

Beatrice Proves That Age Is In The Mind

Even the most shy student improves at GV Noosa and a wonderful example is Beatrice Zurbuchen.

Beatrice arrived four weeks ago and was terrified at the prospect of learning English.  She thought that being an ‘older woman’ travelling on her own that she wouldn’t fit in with the younger students. However, it proved quite the opposite. Beatrice quickly became a favourite in the class due to her friendly nature and the students were very sad to say goodbye to her today. “Age is all in the mind”, one told me, “you are as young as you feel”.

Beatrice’s husband is flying out to meet her and they will  travel to Adelaide and central Australia together. Happy Travels Beatrice.

Passion for Fashion…and shopping!

Have you been planning a trip to Eumundi Markets?  If you like to mix fashion with your shopping, tomorrow might be a good time to go!

Emerging local fashion designers are hosting the ‘Passion for Fashion’ day at Eumundi markets tomorrow, and there are more than 60 stalls with local fashions to be visited.   As always, there are lots of other great stalls to check out, with just about everything you can imagine available for sale.

The markets are open from 6.30am to 2pm.  To find your way out to Eumundi from Noosa, follow this link: http://www.eumundimarkets.com.au/files/ttable.html

The weather looks like it’ll be pretty much ideal for a day at the markets, so why not get your friends together and head out?
