English Lesson Hard to Swallow

Students in the advance class were entertained today by ‘Nacio’ and ‘Freddy’.

Ignacio Ramirez De La Torre
Ignacio Ramirez De La Torre from Spain and Frederik Windstrup Christensen from Denmark had to entertain their class with a table top performance of their national anthems. They had lost a bet on whether they could swallow a piece of bread in under 1 minute during a game of ‘liar liar’.  This might also be a good way to punish students who break our strict English Only rule?

Position Vacant – Japanese Speaker

A temporary position has become available for a Japanese person to do market research for a company in Noosa.

No experience is required for this role, but you must be able to:

1.  Speak reasonably good English

2.  Use the Internet, Word and basic Excel

The working hours would be fairly flexible, but you would be expected to fit in with our normal work hours of 9-5, Monday to Friday.

If you have a laptop, this would be an advantage, and we will pay an extra rate for useage.

If you are interested, please email greg@justlamps.com.au, indicating when you are available and for how long, plus any other information that may assist.  More information on the company from:  www.justlamps.com.au

Hello from Tai

Tai Chun CHENG from Taiwan, studied English at GV Noosa in 2006 in order to pass the entry requirements for an Australian high school.

Tai graduated from GV Noosa at the end of 2006 and attended Sunshine Beach State High School. He says that he had a fantastic time in Noosa, both at our college and at the high school where he had the opportunity to tour north Queensland with the school orchestra.

After graduating, he travelled around Australia and he is now studying international business at Schiller University in Heidelberg. He writes “It is such a beautiful town, an hour away from Frankfurt. Everything has been great so far but I still miss Australia form time to time, especially Noosa, both in the English college and at high school.”

We miss you too Tai. :)Becky

Greetings form Christian Soldan

We received a post card from Christian today, he spent 14 weeks at GV Noosa and left in December 07

Hello everybody!

A final card from Australia. After two months in Melbourne at my cousin’s place , a nice stay in Tasmania , a family weekend on the Great Ocean Road and two weeks in New Zealand, I’m back in OZ!  I went to Sydney last week for a last goodbye to all my friends and I’m now spending my last week in Perth with my uncle. I’m going back to Switzerland after almost one year in OZ! So sad. Greetings, Christian.

Always great to hear from past students. 🙂 Becky

Friday Activity Photos

It was self defence in the park last week, with all the moves of a Hong Kong action flick!

The self defence classes were taught by popular homestay parent Chris Blight.  Chris is Tae Kwon Do expert, and also studied TESOL at GV Noosa.

These courses are intensive and students are required to attend all sessions, be enrolled for the entire course and complete a minimum of two hours homework per night. For the Cambridge and IELTS classes test practice is an integral part of the course and students have the opportunity to have practice in all areas of the tests with teachers skilled in these areas. The business course is lively and fun and includes excursions to different workplaces.Students in these courses may choose to join the Friday activity only.

Cambridge First Certificate and Advanced Certificate Preparation Courses

First Certificate is an upper intermediate level exam which requires students to be able to cope confidently with a range of written and spoken communications.  A pass at this level indicates proficiency in English for use in clerical, secretarial and managerial jobs in many industries, particularly tourism. Advanced Certificate Course requires students to be strong upper intermediate/advanced level.  Some universites and colleges will accept this certificate for entry.

You will be tested in grammar, reading, writng, listening and speaking. For FCE an overall pass of 50 % is expected and for CAE a pass of 65%

IELTS Preparation Course

IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. It meansures ability to communicate in English across all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking- for people who intend to study or work where English is th elanguage of communication. If you want to study at a university or TAFE college in Australia you will need to have an IELTS score. The score depends on the course but you will usually need to get between a 6 and a 7. You also need to have IELTS score to migrate to Australia.

You will be tested in reading, writing, listening and have a speaking interview. You will need to be at an intermediate level.

Business English Course

In this course you improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing in English through professional topics. It is a good course for any student who needs English for their work or to study business. Each week covers a different business topic such as making money, changing cultures, globalization and human resources.

Speak to Becky and Nina for information and advice on the best program for you!

Noosa Junction @ Night

Did you know there are free activities every weekend in the Junction?

“The J” is a community centre located just opposite the Seven 11 (or, for easier navigating, just a short stumble from the Koala Bar and Irish Murphy’s).  It is run by Noosa Council to provide a venue for local concerts and other events.

You can read more about events at ‘The J’ at http://www.thej.com.au/ .

‘The J’ is also always looking for volunteer workers. This can be a great way to engage with the local community. You can read more at http://www.thej.com.au/aboutUs/Work%20at%20The%20J.shtml .

It’s a great weekend for….

Three things you must do before you leave Noosa…so why not this weekend?

1.  A little on-shore Whale Watching – Go to Hell’s Gates in the National Park. This time of year, you’re a great chance to see Whales heading down the Coast on their journey back to the Antarctic.  Even if you don’t see whales, there are always lots of dolphins around.  There’s no need to get on a boat to see whales!

2.  Shop till you drop at Eumundi Markets – You can find the full bus timetable out to the markets here – http://www.eumundimarkets.com.au/files/ttable.html

3.  Catch dinner – Hire a boat and fishing equipment from any of the places along Noosa River.  It’s been so long since it’s rained that the water is crystal clear and full of fish.  Find out what’s biting at http://www.fishingnoosa.com.au/aug0208.htm .  Split the boat hire expense with a group of friends and it’s an inexpensive, fun day out in the sun!

Uta and Sabrina return to study again at GV Noosa

Uta Mallien and Sabrina Hirth say that returning to Noosa felt like coming home.

After completing the Cambridge First Certificate course at Noosa in March 2007, both Uta and Sabrina were accepted into Berlin University to study law. They missed Noosa so much that they have returned to study for the IELTS exam during their semester break and hope to one day work as lawyers in Australia.

They have joined our advanced general English class with Wendy Ward and are studying IELTS in the afternoons with Anjali Sheppard and Mike McDermott.

Hey guys, these two girls are beautiful, intelligent and SINGLE!
